How To Travel From Hong Kong to Macau, Easy Guide

Ritik Jain

When you plan to visit, you may pair Hong Kong with Macau & that is exactly what I did. I planned HongKong for 5-6 days and added Macau for 2 days. I am going to share you ways in which you can travel to Macau from HongKong. This is going to be one of the easiest guide & you would not have to go anywhere else to find information regarding this.

I have mentions three ways to travel to Macau, by ferry, bus, & directly from Hong Kong airport after you land.

Total Distance

By ferry the distance is 66 kilometres or 36 nautical miles, if you go by road with bus it is similar ie, 65 kilometres.

Travel by Ferry

If you wish to travel by ferry, you may see beautiful views of the island, & many people prefer to travel by this means. You have two options from where you can take the ferry –

  1. Sheung Wan Hong Kong ferry terminal
  2. China Ferry Terminal – Tsim Sha Sui (Kawloon)

For Macau also you have two terminal options –

  1. Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal
  2. Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal

From which terminal to travel ?

So for many tourists out there, you are gonna stay near Tsim Sha Tsui as it is closer to many attractions, though the area itself is pretty expensive, but totally worth staying. I recommend using China Ferry Terminal otherwise if you are staying in Hong Kong Island then obviously you can go to Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal.

On the other hand for Macau, you should arrive at the Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal as it is very close to Cotai Strip, the fun strip as I like to say it.

How to Reach to Ferry Terminal in HongKong ?

  1. Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal – In order to reach here you can take a taxi or budget option, MRT.  You can take the blue line to Shueng wan station & once you arrive you have to take the Exit D which will lead you to Shun tak centre, the terminal is located here.
  2. China Ferry Terminal – You have to reach to China Hong Kong City Complex, for that take the red line MRT to Tsim Sha Tsui Station & take the exit A1 (Kawloon Park Mosque) & you have to walk for about 15 mins on Canton road until you reach the complex, or you can always book a cab if you want to skip walking.

Ferry Tickets & Price

Shueng Wan Ferry Terminal/ China Ferry Terminal  – the ferry generally costs around 175 HKD for a economy class ticket by Turbo Jet & you also have other option Cotai WaterJet, that starts with 175 HKD for Cotai Class, 310 HKD for Cotai First & 2480 HKD for VIP cabin. Also note that these rates are specified for weekdays, weekend & night travel will be a little more expensive.

You can get ferry in every half an hour, so no need to worry if you are late as the tickets are acceptable for any time. Also, you need to clear immigration before departing. Within hour you will reach your destination (Macau Taipa Island). After arrival at Macau Terminal you have to clear immigration again before heading out, the process is quick.

I have also written an article on a perfect one day itinerary for Macau, you might want to check it out.

Travel By Bus

I personally took this route as this was cheaper and the travel duration is almost similar, plus you get to experience the world’s longest sea bridge ever built. It is called the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau bridge (HZMB). As the name suggest, it connect three destinations by road.

The bridge is 55 kilometres long & it also includes tunnel. Trust me this is way more relaxing experience than the ferry.

How to Reach HZMB Bus Terminal?

HZMB Bus terminal is situated near Hong Kong International Airport, you just have to take bus A21 that will drop you off at the bus terminal which goes to Zhuhai & Macau or you can book a cab (expensive).

After you reach you have to complete immigration & take a bus ticket.

Bus Ticket Price

This is where it is all worth it, at just 65 HKD you get a ticket to Macau compared to the ferry it is pretty impressive. Please note that the ticket price may increase at night or on holidays, but not by too much. You can buy the tickets from the computer counters yourself, if you are struggling with the language just ask for help, staff will get the ticket for you.

Bus Review

Bus is pretty good, very comfortable. The ride is not too long, generally it will take around an hour to reach Macau island. They also give you storage options to keep you luggage. We saw amazing views of the sea in the starting until we get into the tunnel. The roads are butter smooth.

Bus is fully air conditioned so no sweating. Seats are okay, acceptable. The shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes so you can go pretty much anytime & you will get yourself a bus just in time. The tickets are valid for the day you bought. Overall considering the price I would rate it 10 out of 10.

I took bus again from Macau to Hong Kong as my flight was from Hong Kong, the experience was pretty smooth.

Hong Kong International Airport to Macau Directly

So traveller also has an option to go directly from Hong Kong airport to Mainland Macau. There are two options available for the same.

  1. Ferry – After landing at Hong Kong International Airport go to transfer desk E2, purchase the ferry ticket. However, this ferry is far more expensive than the route I mentioned you before. Then, you will have to show your passport before immigration & proceed to Sky Pier terminal. Prices start from 290 HKD approximately.
  2. Bus – This is far more better option, to take shuttle bus you need to take B4 circular bus from the airport which is going to cost you just 8 HKD, it will drop you to the HZMB port where you can book your shuttle bus to Macau Taipa for just 65 HKD.
